According to a survey conducted by Vancouver Coastal Health, 13,000 tonnes of perfectly ripe and edible food are discarded in Metro Vancouver each year, despite the fact that nearly 10% of Vancouverites experience food insecurity. This highlights the significant problem of food waste in the region and underscores the need for solutions that can help prevent food waste while also addressing food insecurity.
#1 Grocery stores
Grocery stores redundantly throw out tonnes of perfectly edible food and Reshare helps reduce the net loss from the produce.
#2 Low-income individuals & families
Low-income individuals and families face food insecurities, with nearly 10% of Vancouverites reporting this issue. Reshare provides discounted grocery items, allowing them to access quality ingredients at affordable prices.
#3 The earth
Reshare's efforts also benefit the environment by reducing the amount of food waste and associated carbon emissions, making it a win-win for everyone involved.
What are users' commonalities in terms of interests in ecological sustainability?
Which features would users consider while using a sustainable grocery app?
What are users' current pain points with existing products?
What are users' preferences and attitudes towards grocery shopping?
Based on the survey results, it is clear that Reshare's mission to provide a sustainable and accessible way to prevent food waste is well-aligned with users' values.
Accessibility, quality, convenience, and variety of selections are factors that users will consider whilst using the app.
To avoid delivery fees, Reshare provides pick-ups - users can easily visit their preferred grocery location and have access to a wide variety of discounted foods. Reduced prices allow users to feel like they paid for quality foods, at a lower rate.
Users dislike overpriced delivery fees and service fees, which could indicate that Reshare's model of offering pick-up rather than delivery could be well-received by users.
Users mentioned that they drive to their local grocery store, indicating that the convenience of the Reshare app's pick-up service would be a significant benefit for users.
Most of users are fairly eco-conscious and think about food sustainability while grocery shopping.
Users have emphasized the importance of having access to expiry date information, particularly because Reshare offers soon-to-expire products.
Users expressed their desire to have a map view that allows them to easily identify stores located nearby for convenient access to Reshare's pick-up service.
A significant motivation for users to use the app is their desire to track and see the amount of money they have saved.
Following the user survey, we identified the target audience that would benefit most from Reshare and developed a persona to gain a deeper understanding of their needs, experiences, behaviors, and goals. This persona helped us create a user-centric approach that addressed the specific needs and preferences of our target audience, resulting in a more effective and tailored solution.
We looked through Uber Eats and Instacart to study their application's layout and flow, gaining valuable insights. As a result, Reshare's dashboard incorporates several key elements similar to Uber Eats, including a user-friendly search bar, a convenient address section, and a visually appealing card view that showcases both items and stores. To further enhance Reshare's overall look and feel, I sought inspiration from the Shop app, drawing valuable ideas for the UI design. By combining these insights, Reshare's dashboard provides a seamless and intuitive user experience, making it easier for users to navigate and enjoy the app's features.
Following the user research phase, we mainly focused on thinking about features that we want to implement in the app. So, we had a brainstorming session to come up with features and then built information architecture sitemap, and started building wireframes.
We identified key features for Reshare which were then categorized into three groups like Must have, Nice to have, Extras based on their priorities.
The flow chart helped visualize key functions on each page and map out how users navigate the app to complete tasks.
After defining the key features of the app, we moved on to the design phase, where we created wireframes with a focus on a minimalist, user-centered design. These wireframes allowed us to visualize how each page would incorporate essential information.
Prior to developing high-fidelity prototypes, we created a style guide that would allow multiple designers to approach the app design in a clear, unified way. This guide was created to ensure consistency across all design and content. The style guide served as a reference point for all team members, ensuring that everyone was on the same page and that our design remained cohesive and aligned with our overall brand identity.
After we designed wireframes and created a style guide, we conducted user testings with our target audience to understand exactly which parts of the design frustrate people and generate more intuitive user interactions. By observing and analyzing user behavior and feedback, we were able to make adjustments to the design that enhanced the user experience and ensured more intuitive interactions.
Before moving on to designing mid-fidelity and high-fidelity prototypes, we conducted both expectancy testing and performance testing with our target audience. The results of these tests provided valuable insights into user expectations and preferences, as well as identifying any areas where the app's performance could be improved. Here are some key takeaways from the testing:
Using the insights gained from user testing and following the style guide, we created high-fidelity prototypes that ensure a seamless user experience. Our focus was on making the app intuitive and visually appealing while maintaining consistency with the overall design concept. The end result is a fully-realized prototype that accurately reflects the vision for the Reshare app.
We designed the Reshare tote bag for users who are fighting the food waste. We also created a brochure to better explain and promote the app.
