Overview

A sustainable solution while benefiting users.

Problem

According to a survey conducted by Vancouver Coastal Health, 13,000 tonnes of perfectly ripe and edible food are discarded in Metro Vancouver each year, despite the fact that nearly 10% of Vancouverites experience food insecurity. This highlights the significant problem of food waste in the region and underscores the need for solutions that can help prevent food waste while also addressing food insecurity.

Solution

#1 Grocery stores
Grocery stores redundantly throw out tonnes of perfectly edible food and Reshare helps reduce the net loss from the produce.

#2 Low-income individuals & families
Low-income individuals and families face food insecurities, with nearly 10% of Vancouverites reporting this issue. Reshare provides discounted grocery items, allowing them to access quality ingredients at affordable prices.

#3 The earth
Reshare's efforts also benefit the environment by reducing the amount of food waste and associated carbon emissions, making it a win-win for everyone involved.

What are users' preferences and attitudes towards grocery shopping?

User Survey

Based on the survey results, it is clear that Reshare's mission to provide a sustainable and accessible way to prevent food waste is well-aligned with users' values.

Accessibility, quality, convenience, and variety of selections are factors that users will consider whilst using the app.

To avoid delivery fees, Reshare provides pick-ups - users can easily visit their preferred grocery location and have access to a wide variety of discounted foods. Reduced prices allow users to feel like they paid for quality foods, at a lower rate.

Cost-Effective Approach: Pick-Up Over Delivery

Users dislike overpriced delivery fees and service fees, which could indicate that Reshare's model of offering pick-up rather than delivery could be well-received by users.

Convenience of Pick-Up Service

Users mentioned that they drive to their local grocery store, indicating that the convenience of the Reshare app's pick-up service would be a significant benefit for users.

Eco-Conscious Users

Most of users are fairly eco-conscious and think about food sustainability while grocery shopping.

Importance of Expiry Date Information

Users have emphasized the importance of having access to expiry date information, particularly because Reshare offers soon-to-expire products.

Map View for Nearby Store Identification

Users expressed their desire to have a map view that allows them to easily identify stores located nearby for convenient access to Reshare's pick-up service.

Tracking and Celebrating Savings

A significant motivation for users to use the app is their desire to track and see the amount of money they have saved.

Analysis

Persona

Following the user survey, we identified the target audience that would benefit most from Reshare and developed a persona to gain a deeper understanding of their needs, experiences, behaviors, and goals. This persona helped us create a user-centric approach that addressed the specific needs and preferences of our target audience, resulting in a more effective and tailored solution.

Competitive analysis

We looked through Uber Eats and Instacart to study their application's layout and flow, gaining valuable insights. As a result, Reshare's dashboard incorporates several key elements similar to Uber Eats, including a user-friendly search bar, a convenient address section, and a visually appealing card view that showcases both items and stores. To further enhance Reshare's overall look and feel, I sought inspiration from the Shop app, drawing valuable ideas for the UI design. By combining these insights, Reshare's dashboard provides a seamless and intuitive user experience, making it easier for users to navigate and enjoy the app's features.

Ideation

Following the user research phase, we mainly focused on thinking about features that we want to implement in the app. So, we had a brainstorming session to come up with features and then built information architecture sitemap, and started building wireframes.

Brainstorming · Information Architecture · Wireframes
Brainstorming

We identified key features for Reshare which were then categorized into three groups like Must have, Nice to have, Extras based on their priorities.

Information Architecture

The flow chart helped visualize key functions on each page and map out how users navigate the app to complete tasks.

Task Model

Building task models was very helpful by allowing us to visualize the process users would take to achieve their goals and complete their expected tasks.

Wireframes

After defining the key features of the app, we moved on to the design phase, where we created wireframes with a focus on a minimalist, user-centered design. These wireframes allowed us to visualize how each page would incorporate essential information.

04

Design

Prior to developing high-fidelity prototypes, we created a style guide that would allow multiple designers to approach the app design in a clear, unified way. This guide was created to ensure consistency across all design and content. The style guide served as a reference point for all team members, ensuring that everyone was on the same page and that our design remained cohesive and aligned with our overall brand identity.

Validation

After we designed wireframes and created a style guide, we conducted user testings with our target audience to understand exactly which parts of the design frustrate people and generate more intuitive user interactions. By observing and analyzing user behavior and feedback, we were able to make adjustments to the design that enhanced the user experience and ensured more intuitive interactions.

Expectancy Testing & Performance Testing
User Testing

Before moving on to designing mid-fidelity and high-fidelity prototypes, we conducted both expectancy testing and performance testing with our target audience. The results of these tests provided valuable insights into user expectations and preferences, as well as identifying any areas where the app's performance could be improved. Here are some key takeaways from the testing:

Final Design

High-Fidelity Prototypes

Using the insights gained from user testing and following the style guide, we created high-fidelity prototypes that ensure a seamless user experience. Our focus was on making the app intuitive and visually appealing while maintaining consistency with the overall design concept. The end result is a fully-realized prototype that accurately reflects the vision for the Reshare app.

Customer user prototypes

Access a grocery store to browse items.

After creating an account or logging in to Reshare, users can easily access a grocery store page to browse discounted grocery items. To make users' purchase process to be intuitive, we have opened many ways to access a store page.

First, users can click a browse icon on a navigation bar and check stores filtered by saved stores, stores near users, and recommended stores.

Second, the dashboard shows stores near users and stores users like based on the users' distance and the relevant data. I believe it is the easiest way to find a store because the dashboard is the first page users would navigate and users would be interested in browsing the dashboard page to find a suitable store.

Lastly, the dashboard displays the user's location based on information users input on the app. Users can easily click the address and it'll show a map near the address and all stores that offer grocery items near users.

Place an order of discounted grocery items.

After navigating to a store page that is most suitable for the user, the user can simply browse products provided by the grocery store. Reshare sort items by grocery produce categories such as fruits, grains, milk, greens, and cans. In doing so, the app increases users' accessibility and convenience.

After adding items to the shopping cart, users can set a pick up time that's available for the store and the user. The checkout process is fairly easy to complete and Reshare notifies that the order has been successfully placed. Users can get the information about the location of the store by clicking the button linked to Google Maps.

Change the location if needed.

Users can navigate to the map page through the address on the dashboard or the map icon on the nav bar. Users can change the location based on where they are to browse stores around them.

The location users have inputted on the app will be saved for users to further utilize them

Check the order status.

There is an order page that shows all the orders the user has placed. Users are able to get the information about the store, the items, and the order process on the order page.

From the dashboard page, the user can click either notification icon or the order icon on the navbar to access the order page.

Admin user prototyping

Post an item that is going to be expired soon and check customers' orders easily.

The dashboard allows store mangers to easily check posted items, edit and remove items. They can post an item by clicking the plus button either on the nav bar or on the dashboard page.

That will lead the user to a camera access page that allows you to take a photo of the item. After uploading a photo, the user can finalize posting the item by typing the item title, description, expiry date, quantity, original price, and discounted price.

Lastly, there is a page for order status that allows the user to check all order information including the order number, customer pick-up time, and order status such as completed order, pending order, or cancelled order. When we built the app, we considered users the most and made sure the process steps to be intuitive and very easy to complete.

Promotional Materials

We designed the Reshare tote bag for users who are fighting the food waste. We also created a brochure to better explain and promote the app.
